A Murmur of Moonshadow: Fairy Paths

All who explore the forest beyond the walls know that to leave the path is to invite... misfortune. Some few have learned an additional lesson in less than fortunate circumstances; not all paths can be trusted. Most parties sent out into Moonshadow are no strangers to eerie fungi that have an unfortunate effect on those who tread too near; but few know that certain breeds invite such a tread. The fae deceiver is an unusual mushroom that closely resembles the misshapen bone white cobbles that make up the paths in the forest.

When Shadow has not risen high for some time, and the mists are thick, paths formed of these deceptive caps are not unknown. They are hard to distinguish from the path by sight, and quickly harden as they age. Yet, when Shadow finally does rise, they decay quickly, often leaving a party stranded in less than pleasant surroundings. These fae tricksters have been known to cover some of the more malevolent pitfalls of the forest, their dissolution offering a quick meal to what waits beneath.

Why these mushrooms form paths is unknown; it has been speculated that they truly are the work of shadowy fey entities with cruel intent. This tale does have some support, for these fae deceivers burn when rune water touches them and it is said that the flutter of tiny wings can be heard near where they grow, though the rumours of mocking laughter are still widely disbelieved.
