As unlikely as it sounds, in the early days, some saw the portal to Moonshadow as a potential sanctuary; such were the priests of Saint Eva. These mendacious monks, at first, spread word of a coming apocalypse to draw the wealth from fearful commoners. Later, after a series of unusually precise omens, they came to believe their own cant, and so they overwhelmed the guards and fled into the portal, seeking to escape their prognosticated end.
Their coming to Moonshadow was at first exultant; but, as the realities of this cursed realm set in, exultation turned to ire under the lunae light. These faithless priests were quick to turn on their so called prophet, cutting from him his tongue and his hands; they left him nailed above the gates as they marched into the forest.
It is whispered that not all of these malicious clerics perished to the nightmares of the forest, and that some can be found inhabiting the ruins of a small shrine somewhere south of the fort. They are said to have found a new god, one who answers their prayers, though what they pray for remains a mystery. No living man has ever seen this place, though the the large number of shambling dead coming from the south having neither tongue, nor hands, lends some weight to this whisper.
